Happy New Year an thank you to the many visitors, new and returning to this website. One of my New Years resolutions is to post here more regularly – So here goes with a small selection of dates for January & early February 2019.
18th JANUARY
7.30pm BARBICAN
BEETHOVEN – VIOLIN CONCERTO
SCHOENBERG – PELLEAS UND MELISANDE
BBC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA – LOTHAR KOENIGS, JAMES EHNES
I’m looking forward to this programme! One of the greatest if not the greatest violin concerto ever written plus the rich lushness and complex layers of Schoenberg’s symphonic poem, Pelleas and Melisande.
23rd JANUARY
7.30pm BARBICAN
CAUSTON – IK ZEG:Nu
SCHUMANN – CELLO CONCERTO
BRAHMS – SYMPHONY No 3
BBC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Schumann’s pioneerig cello concerto and Brahms’ 3rd Symphony make this a great programme. In addition there is the world premiere of Richard Causton’s IK zeg:Nu (I say:Now) which should be interesting to discover!
2nd FEBRUARY
7.30pm NORTHAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL
GLINKA – RUSLAN AND LUDMILLA OVERTURE
BENJAMIN – ROMANTIC FANTASY FOR VIOLIN AND VIOLA
DVORAK – NEW WORLD SYMPHONY
NORTHAMPTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, STEPHEN BRYANT, BENJAMIN ROSKAMS
The Arthur Benjamin Romantic Fantasy for Violin, Viola and Orchestra is a really good piece – beautiful melodies and a lot of fast, exciting passage work. I last played it with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and principal viola Norbert Blume about 15 years ago (!). This time, I’m playing it with Benjamin Roskams who I’ve worked with many times. Looking forward to this and hearing the rest of the programme.
